KABUL - As the National Security Council (NSC) discussed the Jalrez deaths, President Ashraf Ghani on Sunday said the carnage would not go unanswered.

On Thursday heavily-armed insurgents stormed and seized several police check posts and later killed 24 Afghan Local Police (ALP) men in central Maidan Wardak.

Some of the ALP corpses were decapitated and burned. The incident sparked protests and brought under severe criticism the government amid calls for a deep investigation into the attack.

The NSC which met at the Presidential Palace with President Ghani in the chair evaluated the incident.

A statement from the presidential palace said the NSC strongly condemned the inhuman action of rebels and called it a massive war crime.

“This attack would not go without a response,” the statement quoted President Ghani as saying.

The statement said the president nominated a high-level delegation to assiduously probe the incident from every aspect within three days.

The president said any kind of negligence if found would also be addressed.

Ghani also appointed another delegation to extend the national unity government leaders condolences to families of the martyred security men.

The NSC decided to take all necessary measures for improvement in coordination among security organs to prevent such incidents in the future.

The NSC also stressed capacity-building of Afghan security forces and the creation of a mechanism to timely dispatch reinforcements to all parts of the country. (Pajhwok)
