KABUL - The European Union (EU) has urged the Afghan government to move from words to deeds to show the Afghan people it was serious about implementing reforms.

At the Senior Officials' Meeting in Kabul, the international community reiterated its support towards the Afghan people, a statement from the EU mission in Kabul said.

It said the meeting commended the Afghan government and the international community's efforts to refresh the Tokyo Mutual Accountability Framework --- a mutual agreement for cooperation between the government of Afghanistan and the international community.

After the meeting, EU Special Representative and Head of the EU Delegation to Afghanistan, Franz Michael Mellbin, commented: "On behalf of the European Union, the Kingdom of Norway and the Swiss Confederation I would like to express our gratitude towards the Afghan Government for hosting this meeting.”

He said the meeting underlined the Afghan government's continued effort and commitment to move towards self-reliance.

“This is key to our support going forward. The meeting highlighted the continued partnership and commitment from the EU and the international community towards Afghanistan and the Afghan people.”

He said to further emphasize the long-term commitment of the EU towards the Afghan people, the EU would co-host the next ministerial meeting in Brussels with the Afghan government.

"Now it's urgent that the government moves from words to deeds in order to demonstrate to the Afghan people that the government is serious about implementing reforms for the benefit of all Afghans.”

He said they urged the Kabul administration to complete the formation of the government including the appointment of the remaining provincial governors and deputy ministers.

“This is a key prerequisite for the government's ability to implement reforms that can lead to a self-reliant Afghanistan," said Mellbin. (Pajhwok)
