KABUL - Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Abdullah Abdullah would represent Afghanistan in the 70th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) set to open on Tuesday, sources said.

Whishing anonymity, a government official told Pajhwok Afghan News President Ashraf Ghani would not take part in the UN   general assembly meeting.

Another source said doctors had advised the president to rest and avoid going on long trips.

It is worth mentioning that President Ghani underwent a foot surgery last month in Germany, where doctors had advised him to rest most of the time.

Meanwhile, Javed Faisal, the CEO spokesman, confirmed that Dr Abdullah would be representing the Afghan delegation to the UN general assembly.

Foreign Minister Salahuddin Rabani and other officials would accompany Abdullah on the trip to New York. During the visit, Mahmood Saiqal would be introduced as Afghanistan’s representative to the UN.

But another source claimed differences had developed between the president and the CEO over the New York trip.

The source said the president had suggested that Salahuddin Rabbani and National Security Advisor Mohammad Hanif Atmar should attend the UN General Assembly, but the CEO disagreed and insisted he himself would lead the Afghan delegation.

The 70th meeting of the United Nations general assembly will see the adoption of the post-2015 development agenda, the follow-up to the UN’s millenium development goals which were set in 2000 with a completion date of this year. (Pajhwok)
