KABUL - A coalition of political parties and civil society groups said the government’s weak approach to deal with security challenges could not prevent the growing threats from Daesh and Taliban in the country.
Mohammad Omar Ayar, founder of the Political Parties and Civil Society Organizations Network (PPCSON), told reporters here that their demand was giving a proper place to political parties in parliament and warned of boycotting the upcoming Wolesi Jirga (WJ) election if their demand could not be materialised.
According to him, the government had miserably failed to implement it election pledges and the country continued to suffer from widespread administrative and moral corruption and fast deteriorating security situations.
He said capital flight and migration of skilled youth witnessed unprecedented increase and the economy lied in tatters after the unity government took office.
PPCSON issued an eight-point resolution that supported the implementation of the Election Reform Commission (ERC)’s suggestions, particularly the introduction of parallel voting system in which political parties are given a chance to field their candidates.
On August 30, the ERC for the first time presented its suggestions about reforms in the electoral system to the government.
Switching from the current Single Non-Transferable Vote (SNTV) exercise to a system which could pave the way for political parties to take part in election to parliament and to have affective role in legislation and nation-building was among ERC’s suggestions.
Mujtaba Paikan, head of the Green Alternative Organisation (GAO), said lawlessness, target killings and other illegal activities were on the rise, widening the gap between the government and the masses.
He said nothing significant could be done over the past 14 years to ensure the freedom of press, strengthen democracy, protect human rights, alleviate poverty and resolve other socio-economic problems.
Established two months ago and active in 22 provinces, PPCSON is comprised of 10 political parties and 67 civil society organizations. (Pajhwok)
