Security Situation Still Catastrophic in Kunduz: MPs

KABUL - A number of MPs in the Wolesi Jirga (Lower House of Parliament) said at Saturday's session that the SECURITY situation in Kunduz is still "catastrophic".

Abdul Rauf Ibrahimi, the Speaker of the House, called on government to review military operations in Kunduz and said the current operation "is not enough" to eliminate the threat.

Other MPs said that Taliban and Daesh insurgents are carrying out crimes in Afghanistan "under the name of Islam."

An MP, Mirdad Khan Nijrabi said that "Afghan commandos should seriously launch military operations in different parts of Kunduz city".

Ibrahimi has appointed a commission to visit Kunduz city and investigate the crisis.

Early Saturday, TOLOnews journalist Karim Amini who is reporting from Kunduz, said that house-to-house operations still continue in the city to clear insurgents hiding in civilian homes.

He said threats remain in some parts of the city but security forces have re-taken key areas of the city.

There are still no official details on casualties but hospital officials say at least 100 people, plus over 400 insurgents, have been killed in the 13-day battle.

About 6,000 Kunduz families have been reportedly displaced after the Taliban captured the city last Monday following a massive attack by hundreds of insurgents. (Tolonews)
