KABUL – Concerned officials on Tuesday confirmed date of at least 115 people following Monday's deadly 7.5 magnitude earthquake in Afghanistan.

The worst hit areas were Badakhshan, Takhar, Baghlan, Parwan, Nangarhar and Kunduz provinces, said officials adding that the death toll is expected to rise.

In addition, nearly 300 people were injured.

Officials said one of their primary concerns was the lack of communication with some areas after mobile network services went down after the quake.

Service was restored after a few hours to Kabul and other parts of the country but remote areas were still experiencing outages.

However, officials said aid agencies have started relief operations.

Extensive damage has been reported in villages and towns across the northern and eastern region, where houses have been leveled in many instances.

The quake – which is believed to have been the most powerful in the country's recent history – occurred at about 1:40pm local time on Monday afternoon.

In an address to the nation CEO Abdullah Abdullah warned of possible aftershocks.

He also called on aid agencies and other organizations to help with urgent aid to those affected.

Abdullah said that efforts are underway to assess the affected areas and dispatch emergency relief packages. (Tolonews)
