Kerry to Discuss Regional Security and Situation in Afghanistan

BISHKEK - U.S. Secretary of State, John Kerry, will discuss the regional security issues and prospects of Tajik-American cooperation during his visit to Tajikistan on November 2.

The Secretary will hold talks with the Tajik President Emomali Rahmon and his Tajik counterpart Sirodjidin Aslov at the meeting held in the framework of his Central Asian tour.

The sides will review bilateral cooperation, regional problems and other issues of mutual interest. The upcoming negotiations will be focused on the current situation in Afghanistan, cooperation issues in protection strengthening of the Tajik-Afghan border, as well as the prospects of development of various infrastructure project aimed at development of economic cooperation of the Central Asian countries.

John Kerry will left for Austria on October 28, according to the State Department spokesman, John Kirby.

The Secretary of State will hold bilateral and multilateral meetings with the foreign counterparts to discuss the ongoing crisis in Sirya. The meetings are scheduled for October 29 in Vienna.

After, John Kerry will arrive in Bishkek, Samarkand, Astana, Dushanbe, Ashgabat, where he will conduct bilateral talks with government leaders of these countries.

This is the first visit of the Secretary to Central Asia and his first ever visit to all five Central Asian countries within one trip, said Kirby.

John Kerry will take part in the opening ceremony of the new campus of the American University of Central Asia (AUCA) and new building of the U.S. Embassy in Bishkek.

In Samarkand, the Secretary will participate in a joint meeting with the foreign ministers of all five countries. This meeting, a new format for dialogue between the United States and the Central Asian republics known as the “C5+1,” will allow the Secretary and ministers to discuss regional and global opportunities and challenges.

In Astana, the Secretary will participate in the fourth meeting of the U.S.-Kazakhstan Strategic Partnership Dialogue and deliver remarks on Central Asia’s role in addressing global issues at Nazarbayev University.

While in Ashgabat and Dushanbe, the Secretary will discuss a range of bilateral and regional issues of mutual interest with senior government officials. (AKIpress)
