Pakistan Awaits Ghani’s Nod to Visit Islamabad

ISLAMABAD - Pakistani government is still waiting for Afghan President Ashraf Ghani's answer as to whether he will attend the Heart of Asia International Conference in Islamabad on Wednesday, Pakistani media reported.

Forty three countries and organizations will participate in the conference where development with regards to Afghanistan figures prominently.

Pakistan's Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif will kick off the conference, which is scheduled to be held at the Foreign Office.

However, reports indicate that Afghan Foreign Minister Salahuddin Rabbani will attend the conference but as yet there is no confirmation as to whether Ghani will also attend.

This comes after last week's meeting between Nawaz, Ghani and British Prime Minister David Cameron on the sidelines of the UN Summit on Climate Change (COP21).

During the course of discussions, Sharif stressed the need for all parties to remain committed to the promotion of peace and stability in Afghanistan, notwithstanding the obstacles and impediments in the pursuit of this objective.

Sharif also assured the leaders of Afghanistan and the United Kingdom of his government's strong resolve and commitment to ensure that Pakistani soil is not used for terrorism activities.

He also told Ghani that a warm welcome awaits him in Islamabad at the Heart of Asia Meeting scheduled to start on December 9. (Tolonews)
