AGO Slaps Travel Ban on 143 Kabul Bank Defaulters

KABUL - The spokesman for the Attorney General's Office (AGO), Basir Azizi, announced on Tuesday that 143 people have been issued travel bans in connection with the Kabul Bank scandal.

In addition, he said that 227 people have been summonsed to appear before them in connection with the case.

However, he said 60 percent of the money owed in bank loans in the controversial case has been recovered adding that AGO was committed to finalizing the case.

This comes after the AGO issued travel bans on 150 defaulters back in July. They also had their assets frozen.

The Kabul Bank collapsed in 2010 after it faced a depositor crisis. In the wake of this, a large-scale embezzlement scheme by some of the bank's top executives was exposed.

Since taking office late last year, President Ashraf Ghani has pursued legal action against those involved in the scandal.

The Kabul Bank case has captured the attention of the international community and the Afghan public alike, seemingly illustrating the depth of Afghanistan's corruption woes. (Tolonews)
