LASHKARGAH - The presidential envoy for Helmand’s security affairs, Abdul Jabbar Qahraman, said he had 90 percent completed his plans to improve the security of the restive province.
Soon after being appointed as the president’s representative for Helmand security, the lawmaker visited Lashkargah and announced that he had prepared several plans to improve the security situation in Helmand.
President Ashraf Ghani has appointed Qahraman, a lower house member from Helmand, as his special envoy for security matters of Helmand through a presidential decree.
Qahraman had told reporters that effective plans were being devised to improve the security situation in Helmand.
“My visit to Helmand has three reasons -- improvement of the coordination between security forces, the elimination of Taliban and devising a long-term strategy for peace and stability in the province.”
During an exclusive interview with Pajhwok Afghan News, Qahraman said the conflict in Helmand was complex, but they had 90 percent completed their plans to reverse the tide of insecurity in the province.
He said enough security forces and military gear were available in Helmand, but the lack of coordination among security forces and interferences had resulted in the fragile security situation.
He said security improvement in Helmand needed a lot of time, but he would spare no effort in early strengthening of security. He said foreign troops had promised continued air support, which would help him reach his goal.
“The president and the three organs of security forces support me and that’s why I believe we will soon make progress in improving security.”
Qahraman did not provide a timeframe for implementation of his plans, but said he was trying to pave the ground for a lasting peace in the province.
But a close aide of Qahraman told Pajhwok Afghan News that a major operation to be led by Qahrama would be launched during the ongoing week against militants in a number of areas. He said security forces, weapons and other needed resources had been readied to launch the offensive.
Qahraman took the helm of affairs at a time when Taliban are in control of several districts and clashes are underway in several parts of the province. (Pajhwok)
