DABS to Increase the Price of Imported Electricity by 25 Percent

KABUL - The officials in Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS), the state-run electricity supplying company, have said the price of imported electricity will be increased by 25 percent.
DABS spokesman Wahidullah Tawhidi said the decision to increase the electricity price was taken due to increase in Dollars value against the Afghan currency.
He said the DABS suffered a loss of $17 to $18 million during the last solar year due to sharp rise in Dollars value as Afghanistan purchase electricity from Iran, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan in Dollars.
Tawhidi further added that the government is supplying electricity and charge the consumers in Afghan currency which has resulted to DABS suffering a considerable loss.
According to Tawhidi, DABS also suffered around $2.5 million during the winter after the insurgents cut the electricity supply lines in northern Baghlan province.
He said the policy will only apply on electricity imported from the neighboring countries.
According to reports, Afghanistan is importing the majority of electricity from the neighboring Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Iran which forms 70% of the total electricity needed for the country. (KP)
