GHAZNI CITY - Six hundred students in the Gilan district of southern Ghazni province have only two teachers, residents of the area said on Saturday.
Mohammad Pazeer, a primary schoolteacher and resident of Shenkai area, told Pajhwok Afghan News he alone taught 500 students. The school where he is posted is faced with multiple problems.
Only three textbooks are available for students. “I am alone here teaching a large number of students because the ministry concerned is sending teachers, who must work here, to other school,” he lamented.
Occasionally, policemen come to schools to teach students, according to Pazeer,whose school has no administrative staff. It was built the people and is being run by them.
Sadullah, a student of 4th class, told Pajhwok Afghan News they had no textbooks or other facilities. “My father teaches me lessons at home. Sometime police teach us at our school.”
Separately, one teacher at the Mosque of Shinkai village teaches around 100 girl students. Inamullah said it was a government-run school imparting education up to 3rdgrade.
He complained blackboards, chalk, classrooms and other facilities were missing.
Student Basera said: “We go to school with enthusiasm, but there are no books and teachers.” She wants to study well and become a doctor but there is no proper system and management to ensure quality education.
Resident Haji Rahimullah alleged the education department had allocated the teacherposts meant for Shinkai locality to other areas.
Forty teacher posts have been approved for Gilan, but currently only 16 teachers are working across the district. Although there is a girls’ school in the area, some female students have to travel to Jaghori district.
“The education department has done nothing in our district. We haven’t seen the education director for years despite a whole host of problems haunting the vital sector in Gilan.
Police chief Col. Lutfullah Kamran told Pajhwok there was a shortage of teachers in the district. “At times, I send policemen to teach students,” he said.
Currently, a total 600 schools are functional in Ghazni but half of them are without building. Sixteen schools have been closed due to insecurity.(Pajhwok)
