MPs Blasted for Delay over Approving Reforms Decree

KABUL - Officials from a number of electoral monitoring organizations criticized MPs in the Wolesi Jirga (Lower House of Parliament) for delaying the approval of President Ashraf Ghani's legislative decree on electoral reforms.
Chairman of Afghanistan Civil Society Elections Network (ACSEN), Jandad Spinghar, said at a gathering on Sunday that the country will be drawn into a challenging situation if the fate of the reforms decree remains unclear.
"I think there are a number of circles inside government that want to have influence over parliament and prevent the decree's approval. MPs also are thinking about their own businesses," he said.
Meanwhile, Rahmatullah Salehi, head of Free Election Foundation of Afghanistan, said: "Unfortunately, MPs are thinking about their own benefits and interests, instead of deciding on Afghanistan's important issues."
"This decree should be passed as soon as possible and in the meantime, the elections fate should be made clear as well," said MP Ghulam Farooq Majroh.
Bringing reforms to electoral bodies was one of the main commitments made by the National Unity Government leaders during their campaigns in 2014 presidential election.(Tolonews)
