KABUL - The national unity government remains committed to electoral reforms and eliminating the scourge of corruption, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr. Abdullah said on Monday.
The CEO reaffirmed the government’s commitment during a meeting with United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Representative for AfghanistanTadamichi Yamamoto in Kabul.
A statement from the CEO office said preparations for upcoming parliamentary and district polls, electoral reforms, international support and efforts to eradicate corruption came up for discussion at the meeting.
The global fraternity firmly backed electoral reforms in Afghanistan, Yamamoto said, urging the Afghan parliament to approve the presidential decree in this regard so as to ensure an early start to cleaning up the system.
While welcoming support from the international community, Abdullah said the pledge had been renewed at recent high-level meetings.
He added: “The unity government is awaiting parliament’s decision on the legislative decree. Immediately after parliamentary approval, the process of reforms will be set in motion to pave the way for holding elections,” the CEO promised.
The envoy said the UN accorded priority to the Afghan government’s fight against graft, plans for reconciliation and electoral reforms. He asked the Ashraf Ghani administration to keep the promises held out to international partners.
Earlier in the week, President Ashraf Ghani assured the diplomat his government was fully committed to electoral reform and holding free and fair parliamentary and district polls.He also announced the allocation of $10 million to fund poll preparations.(Pajhwok)
