In Memorial: President Renames Deh Mazang As Martyrs’ Square

KABUL - In memory of those killed in Saturday’s twin bombings, President Ashraf Ghani on Sunday renamedthe Deh Mazang Square of Kabul as Martyrs Square.
A day earlier, 80 people were killed and 231 others injured in two suicide attacks on a protest demonstration in the area. The Islamic State (IS) or Daesh militant group claimed responsibility for the assault.
A statement from the Presidential Palace said the Afghans have long been fighting against the militants after electing the current democratic government and adopting the constitution.
It added Afghanistan’s history was witness to efforts for freedom and justice as a large number of men and women sacrificed their lives for the enforcement of democracy.
Ghani changed the name of Deh Mazang Square to Shahidan (Martyrs) Square in respect and remembrance of the people who lost their lives in the terrorist attack claimed by Daesh.
The Martyrs Square would remind future generations of Afghanistan how many people had laid down their lives for promoting democratic values, the statement said.

The president also ordered the Kabul Municipality to rename Deh Mazang as Martyrs Square.(Pajhwok)
