Electoral Reform Decree to be Finalised in Hours: Danish

KABUL - The second vice-president promised on Monday a decisionon long-awaited electoral reforms would be made to the satisfaction of all political groups and the people.
Sarwar Danish discussed the issue -- a key part of the agreement on formation of the unity government -- during a meeting with UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan Tadamichi Yamamoto.
A statement from the VP’s office said the two officials conferred on the electoral reform process. It added a legislative decree on the subject would be issued soon.
“The decree on electoral reforms has been prepared and the amended election law will be approved under the presidential decree.
“We have been trying to reform the election law in a way that will convince all political parties and the Afghan people,” the statement quoted Danish as saying.
He added the legislative decree, which was still under important discussion, would be finalised in the next few hours.
Yamamoto appreciated Danish’s efforts, particularly for electoral reforms. He said the UN was also trying to include the suggestions of all political groups and the Afghan people in the new election law.

The summer recess of the parliament ends on September 6. The president can issue legislative decrees only when the parliament is on recess.(Pajhwok)
