Peace Deal to be Signed Today, Confirms HIA Envoy

KABUL - The Gulbadin Hekmatyar-led Hezb-i-Islami Afghanistan (HIA) top peace negotiator on Wednesday confirmed President Ashraf Ghani and the HIA leader will be signing the peace deal on Thursday.
The peace agreement between the government and the HIA was inked on Sept 22 after negotiations lasting two years.
On behalf of the government, the agreement was signed by High Peace Council (HPC) Chairman Pir Syed Ahmad Gilani and National Security Advisor Mohammad Hanif Atmar.
HIA’s peace delegation head, Amin Karim Amin Karim, told Pajhwok Afghan News a huge gathering was being arranged at the Presidential Palace at about 10am tomorrow when the peace deal would be inked in the presence of high-level government officials and political leaders.
He said the peace deal would be signed by Hekmatyar through a video conference from an unknown place.
On the other hand, a reliable source in the unity government said President Ghani would sign the peace deal during the gathering at the Presidential Palace tomorrow.
Nearly 1,000 people would participate in the gathering at the Presidential Palace. High-ranking government officials, former president Hamid Karzai, Jihadi and political leaders and hundreds of supporters of HIA had been invited to the deal’s signing ceremony. (Pajhwok)
