Jawzjan Governor Slams MRRD

SHIBERGHAN - The Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development (MRRD) has not yet implemented a single water supply program in northern Jawzjan province, the governor complained on Saturday.

Mohammad Alam Sai said water supply schemes for Faizabad, Aqcha, Mardyan, Khan Aqa and Mankajak districts had been approved last year.

But none of them had been implemented so far, the provincial chief executive added. As a result, Sai said, residents of the districts were faced with a drinking water shortage and risked contracting seasonal diseases.

A proposed gas pipeline project could be useful in bringing water from Amu River to the five districts, he believed. The Amu River water supply to the districts would cost $40 million, the governor said, explaining no funds had been earmarked for the project this year.

Engineers and specialists have been charged with surveying the project before the government initiated work on it, said Minister of Rural Rehabilitation and Development Jarullah Mansoori.
