China FM to Visit Pakistan to Discuss Peace in Afghanistan

ISLAMABAD - Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will be visiting Pakistan at the end of this week to discuss peace and stability in Afghanistan, Pakistani foreign ministry says.
Foreign ministry spokesperson Nafees Zakariya announced this at his weekly news briefing in Islamabad on Thursday.
Pakistan, China and some other countries are cooperating closely for peace and reconciliation in Afghanistan, Zakariya told reporters.
According to him, during the visit both sides will also review bilateral relations between Beijing and Islamabad.
Asked about the Afghan opposition to fencing along the border, the spokesperson noted that effective border management is necessary to stem cross border movements of terrorists and facilitate the movement of people and commercial goods.
In addition, he said Pakistan is carrying out the fencing on its side of the border.
The spokesperson also said that Pakistani and Afghan officials, including parliamentary delegations from the two neighboring countries have met in the recent past.
Zakariya said the Pakistani Prime Minister and the Afghan President during their meeting at the sidelines of the summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) also agreed to use the Quadrilateral Coordination Group and bilateral channels to promote peace and reconciliation in Afghanistan.
He said we will therefore welcome visits from the Afghan side.
Responding to a question regarding reportedly US plans to review its policy towards Pakistan, the spokesperson said Pakistan attaches great importance to its relations with the United States which are longstanding.
He said we believe continued cooperation between the two countries is critical for promoting peace and security in the region and beyond.
The foreign ministry spokesperson also said Pakistan is carrying out operations against terrorists without any discrimination.
These operations are driven by the national interests, Zakariya said, adding that the country will not allow its territory to be used against any other nation.
He also said that Pakistan's position on the US drone strikes is very clear.

These attacks are counterproductive and amount to violation of Pakistan's sovereignty, he said. (IRNA)
