Killers of Afghans to be Treated Ruthlessly: Ghani

KABUL - President Ashraf Ghani on Thursday stressed a comprehensive investigation into a recent attack in Kabul, promising the perpetrators would be arrested and treated ruthlessly.
Addressing a memorial ceremony for July 24 attack victims in the capital, the president pledged a thorough probe and deterrent punishment for the assailants.
At least 24 people, including 15 officers of the Ministry of Mines and Petroleum, were killed and 45 others wounded in the suicide attack.
“The victims of this incident, who were groomed for years and we expected them to be an asset. Unfortunately they were cut and the vacuum created by their demise would never be filled,” Ghani remarked.
“We have ordered an investigation into this incident. As you have seen, we have arrested perpetrators of the Kandahar attack. We hope we can arrest the organisers of this incident too. The investigation is complex and we need time,” he said.
Ghani reiterated the enemies of Afghans would be shown no mercy. The government’s stance on spurning the demands of those threatening it with bloodshed should be clear to the people, he said.
Khadim Hussaini, speaking on behalf of the bereaved families, asked the president to create a scientific and cultural complex in memory of the victims.
He also suggested registration of the affected families with the Ministry of Labour, Social Affairs, Martyrs and Disabled (MoLSAMD). Hussain sought jobs for the victims’ children.
Ghani accepted demands of the victims’ families, but he hastened to explain meeting them would take time. He wished the injured a swift recovery.
He ordered the Ministry of Mines and Petroleum to regularly visit the victims’ families and cooperate with them in resolving their problems. Ghani also distributed medals and appreciation letters to heirs of the victims. (Pajhwok)
