US Pushes Pakistan for Indiscriminate Action Against Terrorist ‘Safe Havens’

KABUL - US Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis has called for indiscriminate action against alleged terrorists ‘safe havens’ in Pakistan as it was in Islamabad’s interest and for enduring peace in the region, the New York Times reported on Sunday.
Mattis statement comes on the eve of his scheduled visit to Pakistan on Monday.
In the statement issued here Saturday, US Defense Secretary also said that Washington wanted progress in Pak-US relations.
US Secretary of Defense James Mattis on Friday began his crucial five-day tour of the Middle East and Pakistan.
According to US Department of Defense, Mattis will visit Pakistan, Egypt, Jordan and Kuwait during his tour.
The US Secretary of Defense James Mattis will land in Pakistan on Monday to meet with Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Gen Qamar Bajwa for the discussion on regional security, peace, Afghan conflict and other bilateral issues.
He is scheduled to meet with Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi and Defense Minister Gen Sedki Sobhi today (Saturday).
Mattis will then go to Jordan on Sunday, where King Abdullah II will host a conference on combating extremism in West Africa.
Attendees of the meeting in Jordan will include representatives from many countries in Africa and Europe.
His final stop will be in Kuwait Tuesday, where he will meet with Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah.
Mattis is well known in the region due to his time as commander of U.S. Central Command, which focuses on the Middle East.
Mattis had traveled throughout much of the region then and met with regional and local leaders. (Pajhwok)
