Karzai Appoints Team to Probe Rabbani’s Murder

KABUL - President Hamid Karzai on Sunday appointed a team to investigate the assassination of former High Peace Council Chairman Prof. Burhanuddin Rabbani.
The Jamiat-i-Islami leader was killed on Tuesday evening by a bomber disguised as an insurgent emissary with an important message at his residence in Kabul.
A weekly meeting of the National Security Council (NSC) discussed the assassination and its consequences.

Karzai called the killing of the former president a huge loss to the country. Ministers of defense and interior, the acting head of the National Directorate of Security (NDS) and the attorney general were tasked with probing the killing.

The delegation was asked to use all sources available to it to identify and arrest the perpetrators, a statement from the Presidential Palace said.

"Some arrests have already been made and the information received from them has brought us close to a breakthrough," the acting spy chief said.Previously, NDS officials had suggested the Taliban's Quetta Shura was behind the assassination. But the rebel movement is yet to comment.

A large number of tribal elders and high-profile had been killed in recent months in different parts of the country, Karzai said, while chairing the meeting. The meeting decided special measures should be put in place to provide security for influential people and tribal elders in insecure provinces, the statement added.

Karzai also sought cooperation from the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force in protection of tribal elders.

Vice-Presidents Mohammad Qasim Fahim and Mohammad Karim Khalili, National Security Advisor Rangin Dadfar Spanta, Senior Minister Hidayat Amin Arsala, ministers of defense, interior, counternarcotics, acting NDS head and other officials attended the meeting.
