Politicians Warn Govt Against Taking Action to Prolong Tenure

KABUL - The warning comes after the president reportedly held meetings with certain former Jihadi leaders in what is believed to be a bid to form a grand council.
The government is looking to create a grand council, sources speaking on condition of anonymity said on Thursday.
The council reportedly will be composed of political and Jihadi leaders.
Meanwhile, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani has held separate meetings with the Jihadi and political leaders at the presidential palace.
Reacting to the rumors about the creation of such a council, Sayed Eshaq Gailani, the chairman of Nahzat-e-Hambastagi Milli party of Afghanistan said that the creation of such a council will not have a positive impact on the country unless all Jihadi and political leaders support it.
Ghani met with former Jihadi leaders and head of the Council for Protection and Stability of Afghanistan Abdul Rab Rasoul Sayyaf, the reconciled cohort of Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, Mohammad Mohaqiq, the second deputy of CEO Abdullah Abdullah and senate chief Fazel Hadi Muslimyar.
The presidential palace in a statement said that the meeting was aimed to hold discussions on issues of national interests.
But sources say that the move is aimed by the government to create a grand council named as “Council of Elders”.
“We can not summarize it only with the presence of a few people under the name of Jihadi leaders, because there are a lot of other Jihadi leaders who fought Jihad, I hope that the Afghan government does not follow only the names and it also welcomes its political opponents who exist in this country,” said Gailani.
Until now there are no reports about the aims and objectives of such a council
But, an official from the Council for the Protection and Stability of Afghanistan said that any move to prolong the tenure of the present government is against the law.
“Discussions and talks which urge the creation of a council to prolong the tenure of government without holding elections is against the law and it is in defiance of political logics, it is also not in favor of the national interests of Afghanistan that we look at other options which violate the law,” said Massoud Tarishtwal, spokesman for the Council of Protection and Stability of Afghanistan.  (Tolonews)
