Three Million Afghans Hit By Drought

Three Million Afghans Hit By Drought

KABUL - As Afghanistan marks 10 years since the offensive that toppled the Taliban, a severe drought has hit 14 of the country's 34 provinces.
The UN's World Food Programme (WFP) says that 1/10/afghanistan-facing-severe-drought/"42 million dollars (105 million euros) is needed to feed roughly three million people situated in north and east of the country. The drought comes on top of increasing insecurity and violence, as the country battles insurgents, including the Taliban.

The situation will worsen as winter approaches, warns the WFP's Emilia Casella.

"We are very concerned about the people who are affected by the drought," she says. "People have been left with less than two months of food due to the reduced harvest and we are very concerned that as winter approaches, the situation is only going to get worse."

Afghanistan has not been able to develop the systems necessary to deal with such crises on its own, according to Agriculture Minister Mohammed Asif Rahimi.

"Lower harvests due to drought, and rising food prices worldwide, have created an emergency for Afghans in the north," he said.

The affected provinces are Balkh, Samangan, Takhar, Saripul, Herat, Badghis, Faryab, Jowzjan, Baghlan, Kunduz, Badakshan, Bamiyan, Daikundi and Ghor. (Agencies)
