Japan Assures  Karzai of Commitment to $5b Pledge

KABUL - The Japanese government on Saturday assured the Afghan government that it was committed to its pledge regarding $5 billion (239 billion Afghanis), office of the president said on Saturday.
"Although Japan had suffered a lot during last year's tsunami, the Japanese government was committed to its pledge of $5 billion," the message of Japanese Prime Minister, Yoshihiko Noda sent to President Hamid Karzai on Saturday, has said.

In his message to the Afghan president, Noda had said that the process of peace and reintegration was vital for reconstruction and development of Afghanistan and it should be speeded up, a statement issued by the Presidential Palace, said.

Although the death of the chairman of High Peace Council Burhanuddin Rabbani was a big loss to Afghanistan, it should not affect the peace drive, it quoted, Noda as saying.

Former president, Rabbani was assassinated in a suicide attack on his residence in the high-security Wazir Akbar Khan diplomatic district of Kabul on Sept. 20.

"We together with the International Community seriously support your idea of peace process for stabilization of Afghanistan and uniting the Afghan people," Noda ha old Karzai in the message.

It also said that Japan was ready to play a significant role in and after the upcoming second Bonn conference scheduled to be held on December 5 this year.
