Maidan Wardak Residents Close Kabul-Ghazni Highway

KABUL - Thousands of protesters in central MaidanWardak province on Wednesday shut the Kabul-Ghazni-Bamyan highway for traffic.
Residents of Nirkh, Jalrez and Behsud districts closed the busy highway with containers in the Ghaziabad area on the outskirts of the provincial capital.
They demanded their basic rights, the establishment of a university and change of the province’s name to MaidanWardak according to the constitution.
An organiser of the protest, Mohammad Khalid Karimzai, told Pajhwok Afghan News the government had earlier promised to meet their demands, but no practical step has been taken so far.
He added the highway would remain closed until the government met their demands.
Sharifullah Hotak, a member of provincial council, blamed the government for failing to keep its promises.
He recalled a Presidential Palace delegation had promised them to arrange their meeting with the president, but the proposed contact was yet to materialise. (Pajhwok)
