Karzai Calls on Traders to Help ARCS

KABUL - President Hamid Karzai on Sunday praised the Afghan Red Crescent Society (ARCS) for assistance to the needy and requested traders, industrialists and investors to donate aid to the organization. Reading out Karzai's message on the ARCS special week at a ceremony in Kabul, Deputy Women Affairs Minister Palwasha Kakar said: "The society is the only trustworthy charity, serving orphans, vulnerable and homeless Afghans and foreigners since its establishment."

Karzai said in his message: "I personally commend ARCS philanthropic and benevolent programs and ask my countrymen, especially traders, industrialists and the rich, to extend generous assistance to it."
Starting mid-October, the special week -- the only fund-raising source for the ARCS --was launched in Kabul to collect donations.

Addressing the gathering, ARCS Chairwoman Fatima Gilani called on government officials and traders to contribute money to the body so that it could assist people in need.

She said many people were grappling with economic problems across the country and the rich should lend a helping hand the poor. "The Red Cross always thinks of its people, but this is a week, when people should think of the society how they can help it."

ARCS spokesman Walid Akbar Sarwary told Pajhwok Afghan News more than 260 lottery tickets would be distributed to people during the week.
