Thousands of Drought Hit Families Receive Aid

TALOQAN - Thousands of drought-hit families received food aid, improved seeds and animal feed in northern Takhar province, officials said on Thursday. About 10,000 affected families from 15 districts of the province benefitted from the assistance, the deputy minister of agriculture and livestock told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Salim Kunduzi said each family was given 200 kilograms of wheat, 150 kilograms of improved seeds, 25 kilograms of rice and 200 kilograms of animal feed.

A ton of improved seed cost $800 (37,936 Afghanis), according to Kunduzi.

But local officials and farmers complained the assistance did not meet their requirements. Provincial council member, Najibullah Khaliqi, said the drought had affected most of people and farmers of the province.
