US Seriously Pursuing Peace in Afghanistan: Pompeo

KABUL - US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has said his county was seriously pursuing peace, preventing Afghanistan from becoming safe haven for international terrorism.
“Working with the Afghan government and all interested parties, the US seeks to strengthen Afghan sovereignty, independence and prosperity,” Pompeo tweeted.
Encouraging news from US special representative for Afghan peace Zalmay Khalilzad as he reported significant progress in talks with the Taliban on Afghan reconciliation, he added.
“Meetings here (Doha) were more productive than they have been in the past. We made significant progress on vital issues,” Zalmay Khalilzad tweeted after talks lasting six days with Taliban representatives in the capital of Qatar.
However, he said added: "We have a number of issues left to work out. Nothing is agreed until everything is agreed, and “everything” must include an intra-Afghan dialogue and comprehensive ceasefire."
Taliban in a statement denied that the group had agreed with US official on ceasefire and direct talks with Afghan government. (Pajhwok)
