KABUL - The release of munitions by the US Air Force (USAF) over Afghanistan remained at a high level in January, according to US Air Forces Central Command (AFCENT).
Recently released data shows that USAF manned and unmanned aircraft released 463 munitions over the Central Asian country in January as part of Operation 'Freedom's Sentinel'.
While this represents 76 fewer munitions than December 2018, the figure is the highest recorded for January since at least 2008. Currently available AFCENT data only goes back to 2009.
The intensified use of air power is part of a military campaign launched by US and Afghan forces in November 2017 that is aimed at destroying the revenue sources, training facilities, and support networks of militant groups operating in Afghanistan including the Taliban and the Islamic State-Khorasan (IS-K) groups.
