27 Taliban Killed as Sherzad Battle Comes to an End

JALALABAD - At least 27 Taliban insurgents have been killed and 32 others wounded as security forces’ response to two car suicide attacks in eastern Nangarhar province, an official said on Saturday.
The militants attacked the Sherzad district centre and local police headquarters with two cars full of explosives on Friday night, the governor’s spokesman said.
Attaullah Khogyani told Pajhwok Afghan News as the assaults were frustrated, dozens of insurgent stormed the district centre.
He said the rebels carried out suicide attacks using two vehicles. At least 27 insurgents were killed and 32 others wounded in retaliatory action by the security forces.
He added two security personnel were killed and eight others wounded, The injured security forces are said to be in critical condition.
Governor Shah Mahmood Miakhel and members of the military council followed the fight till late at night. Miakhel said the air force was ready to prevent civilian casualties in the area.
Jalal Khan, a resident of the area, said the militants initially blew up two explosive-laden trucks and then initiated a firefight. He did not provide details about casualties.
Another security source, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said most parts of the district building had been damaged as a result of the first bombing.

On the other hand, the Taliban claimed killing several security forces in the assault, which came hours after the militants announced their spring offensive.(Pajhwok)
