UN, NATO Hail Successful Completion of Peace Jirga

KABUL - The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) and NATO have hailed the successful completion of the Consultative Loya Jirga on peace.
NATO’s Senior Civilian Representative Nickolas Kay said in a tweet: “Conclusions of the Loya Jirga send a very loud message: now is the time for peace and the Taliban should respect the will of the Afghan people. I pay tribute to the #ANDSF who ensured security for this landmark event.”
Meanwhile, UNAMA congratulated the delegates on the successful completion of the jirga and voiced support for their call for a ceasefire.
In a statement, the UN mission said: “This would help create conditions for peace and save Afghan lives. UNAMA stands ready to assist all parties to bring an end to the conflict.”
Separately, the Iranian embassy in Kabul also commended the holding of the massive tribal assembly on a successful note.
'Convening the Loya Jirga, as a traditional symbol of Afghans' participation in decision-making on controversial issues is evidence of people's demand for peace,” the embassy tweeted.
The gathering has issued a communique after five working days, stressing a nation-wide truce ahead of Ramadan, opening of an office for Taliban in the country and release of prisoners.
Around 3,200 people from all over the country participated in the jirga from April 29 to May 3 in Kabul amid tight security. (Pajhwok)
