KABUL - The Electoral Support Group (ESG) welcomes the decision of the Independent Election Commission (IEC) to hold the presidential election on 28 September 2019 as per the revised election timeline.
Whilst the ESG fully acknowledges the principled importance of holding all Afghan elections in a timely fashion, the IEC’s decision prioritizing the holding of the presidential election on 28 September is essential given the very tight timeline and the practical challenges. The objective of holding presidential elections only will enable the IEC to concentrate its resources including personnel and logistics in managing the process. It is of fundamental importance for Afghanistan, its people and institutions to see its successful conclusion. The ESG calls on all stakeholders to work with the IEC and Electoral Complaints Commission (ECC) to ensure credible, transparent and inclusive elections on behalf of the Afghan people. The ESG reiterates its commitment to support the work of the Commissions and continuation of the democratic processes in Afghanistan. (PR)
