Heratis Worried about Low-Quality Medicines

HERAT CITY - Public health officials in western Herat province on Sunday expressed their deep concern about low quality medicines being smuggled into the country from neighboring Pakistan.
According to Civil Hospital officials in Herat city, the provincial capital, poor quality or expired medicines put patients’ lives into risk.
Abdul Hakim Tamana, Herat Public Health director, told Pajhwok Afghan News that each month they seized low quality medicines across the province but still such drugs continued to be sold.
He said due to lack of government’s oversight, smuggled medicines were sent to districts and sold there, calling for tough measures to address the issue.
Tamana claimed such medicines were being smuggled from Pakistan because security forces were unable to prevent their smuggling into southern parts.
He added more than 12 tons of low quality medicines were collected and destroyed during the ongoing year in the province.
Meanwhile, Ashraf Sadat, a civil society activist, told Pajhwok that a large quantity low quality medicines were smuggled and brought to the province by a number of powerful individuals and corrupt people.
He urged the government to take measures for preventing such medicines from reaching province.
On the other hand, Jilani Farhad, the governor’s spokesman, said efforts were under way to stop smuggling of low quality drugs into Herat. (Pajhwok)
