KABUL - As many as 107 districts in Afghanistan face high risk of natural disasters including severe flooding this winter, officials said on Sunday.
Speaking at a ceremony in Kabul to mark International Day for Disaster Reduction, State Minister for Disaster Management Najib Aqa Fahim said that the district facing high risk of natural disasters are in the east, north and central parts of the country.
He said that the United States, Japan and European Union have assisted with $24 million to Afghanistan to help natural disaster management in the country.
Meanwhile, a United Nations official said that the international body is committed to support Afghanistan in tackling natural disasters.
Parvati, deputy of World Food Programme in Afghanistan, said that they would continue to work in close coordination with the Afghan authorities to reduce risk of natural disasters in the country.
Based on data from State Ministry for Disaster Management, 400,000 Afghans have been displaced due to drought since last year.
20,000 families are facing shelter problems. 80,000 homes have been fully destroyed due to flooding. (1TV News)
