Deputy FM Talks Peace  with US, EU Envoys

KABUL - The deputy foreign minister for economic cooperation and Khalilzad discussed joint efforts for an Afghan-led peace process.
The two sides exchanged views on working closely to build regional and international consensus in support of peace, a statement said.
Mirwais Naab highlighted Afghanistan’s priorities including the peace process and the need for building further consensus, especially in the region, on peace.
The issue of direct negotiations between the government of Afghanistan and the Taliban also came up for discussion.
In a series of tweets, Naib said: “Represented AFG in D SRAP mtng n Brussels.We r grateful for immense contribution of our partners to democracy & in pursuit of peace & stability.
“Conclusion of electoral process & start of new Gov is an important milestone that paves way 4 a meaningful peace process.”
“Peace is an important priority 4 all of us. It’s an urgent need of Afghans. We are ready to closely work with our partners 4 an inclusive & result-oriented process…”
There was a regional consensus that an Afghan-led peace was in the interest of regional prosperity and connectivity, Naib wrote.
Peace talks between the US and the Taliban were suspended one and a half months earlier by President Donald Trump after the insurgents attacked a foreign forces’ convoy in Kabul. (Pajhwok)
