President Orders Probe into Wardak Civilian Deaths

KABUL - President Ashraf Ghani has appointed a delegation for investigation into the killing of seven members of a family during a security forces operation in Narkh district of central Maidan Wardak province.
A few weeks ago, forces from the National Directorate of Security (NDS) allegedly killed seven members of the same family in Sad Mardi village of the district.
In a fresh decree, the president has ordered creation of a powerful delegation headed by senior advisor Abdul Rashid Ayubi for investigation into the incident.
The delegation includes members of the National Security Council, the Ministry of Interior, NDS and the Attorney General’s Office, according to the presidential order signed two days ago.
The joint delegation has been tasked with consulting local officials and collecting information about the incident and reporting back to the Presidential Palace.
Abdul Rashid Ayubi, the delegation’s head, told Pajhwok Afghan News that the NDS 01 unit had claimed it conducted operations against Taliban and other armed militants in Narkh district,  but local residents say there were no insurgents in the area and those killed were civilians.
Based on local people’s complaint, the president ordered creation of the powerful delegation to investigate the incident from multiple angles. He said they would soon report to the Presidential Palace.
The delegation is investigating the Maidan Wardak incident after the human rights body called for dismantling the special forces unit. (Pajhwok)
