KABUL - The Wolesi Jirga or lower house of Parliament on Monday demanded allocation of separate fund for enabling women to access their rights and stressed keeping security forces away from politics.
Marking November 25 as the International Day for Elimination of Violence against Women, the Wolesi Jirga issued a statement, saying women in Afghanistan faced unfriendly political, economic, social and cultural situations.
The lower house said 90 percent of Afghan women were subjected to different types of violence, some denied dowry, other deprived of heredity rights and married in compensation for wrongdoing of male family members.
In order to resolve these problems, the Wolesi Jirga urged religious scholars to educate people in this regard. The national assembly stressed the need for urgent legislation to ensure protection of women rights and eliminate violence against the gender.
The lower house also sought assistance from the international community in this regard and asked the Afghan government to allocate separate funds for eradication of violence against women and ensuring their rights.
Security issues:
Some lawmakers complained about the security situation of the country, with lawmaker Abdul Aziz Hakimi asking security institutions to pay attention to the situation.
“We want security forces to be kept away from politics, they should ensure security on Kabul-Parwan highway instead of indulging in other affairs,” he said.
Earlier, Defense Minister Asadullah Khalid said security forces will not allow anyone to stage violent protests and create disorder due to the election.
Lawmaker Ali Akbar Jamshidi said fighting was underway in Kajran district for the past few days and no reinforcement could reach the security forces there so far.
Deputy Speaker Amir Khan Yar asked the Defence and Security Commission of the house to share the concerns of lawmakers with security officials regarding the deteriorating security situation in the country. (Pajhwok)
