PESHAWAR - Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan and US Senator Lindsey Graham on Monday conferred on the current situation in Afghanistan.
Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi and other senior officials were also present at the meeting that took place at the Noor Khan airbase in Islamabad.
In September, the influential Republican lawmaker had earlier met Imran Khan on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.
Graham, who heads of the US Senate’s Judiciary Committee and is a member of the Foreign Relations Committee, has long supported cordial US-Pakistan ties in the interest of peace and security in the region.
Graham’s visit, coming amid reports of a US troop withdrawal from Afghanistan, is seen as part of Washington’s efforts to seek support from Islamabad for persuading the Taliban to agree on a ceasefire.
The Trump administration reportedly plans to call back around 4,000 troops from the war-torn country as early as next week.
A week back, talks between the US and Taliban resumed but were paused again on Thursday after an attack near the sprawling US base in the Bagram district of Parwan province. (Pajhwok)
