International guarantee sought for US-govt-Taliban deals

KABUL: The Movement for Change in Afghanistan (MCA) political party on Wednesday said peace agreements between the US, the Afghan government and Taliban should be based on international guarantees.
Fawzia Kufi, MCA head, told a press conference here that there were hopes for a possible agreement between the Taliban and the US in next few days.
The MCA and the people of Afghanistan hope the agreement would put the war to an end and lead to a nationwide ceasefire and political and regional stability, she said.
“We request intra-Afghan talks should immediately be started after agreement (between the US and the Taliban),” she said.
Kufi said they expected the agreements between the US and Taliban and the Afghan government would be referred to international sources for further assurances.
“If only the Taliban-US agreement is referred to international sources, it would give the Taliban an upper hand over the government,” she said.
She asked parties involved in peace talks to agree be on an inclusive negotiating team that could represent the Afghan people.
The on again and off again negotiations between the US and the Taliban have been ongoing for a year amid reports both sides have inched close to signing a deal, but final agreement is yet to be signed.
The Afghan government says it is working on forming the negotiating team.
The Taliban say they would not talk to the Afghan government but they were ready to talk to Afghan politicians.(pajwak)
