EU Pledges $2m to Help Feeds Afghans

KABUL - The European Union said it will give $2 million in food aid to help people in drought-stricken areas in northern provinces.
Using non-governmental organizations on the ground, the EU will disburse money directly or via cash-for-work schemes to help the local population purchase food.

Last week, aid groups warned that as many as 3 million people in Afghanistan are facing hunger as winter approaches after severe droughts wiped out crops.
The pledge is expected to help 72,000 people and brings the EU's total contribution to the drought crisis to $6 million.

The United Nations in October launched an appeal seeking $142 million in emergency funding. However, it has managed to raise a mere fraction of the money it needs - 7 per cent - from international donors.
