Helmand Students Exposed to Cold in Absence of Buildings

LASHKARGAH - A number of students in southern Helmand province on Tuesday complained they were struggling with multiple problems in cold weather due to lack of school buildings.
Zamray, a student at Bolan Tapi area school in Bolan area of Lashkargah City, the provincial capital, told Pajhwok Afghan News around 1,500 students studied in the school.
He said, “Our school has four teaching rooms and the rest of students attend classes under tents even on a rainy day.”
Mir Agha, a student of Pai Sang school in Bagharan district, said they even lacked enough tents. He said, “The weather is too cold, we need enough tents.
Abdul Bari, a student at Wali Mohammad Karez schoolin Nawzad district, their school was without a building and they learned lessons under the open sky.
Taliban militants have been in control of the mentioned districts over the past few years.
Fida Mohammad, a resident of the provincial capital, told Pajhwok most of schools in the province were without building.
He said, “We have shared the issue several times with the governor and authorities concerned, but to no avail.” He said students struggled with cold weather in absence of teaching rooms.
Mohammad Wali Sarhadi, the deputy governor, told Pajhwok that 177 schools needed buildings.
He said wanted to construct school buildings but Taliban militant were not allowing them to do so in districts. He said efforts were underway to address the issue with mediation of tribal elders.
Taliban spokesman ZabiullahMujahid told Pajhwok they did not allow construction of schools with low quality materials.
He accused the government officials of using low quality materials in construction of schools in the country. (Pajhwok)
