US Presence in Afghanistan a Big Problem: Iran

KABUL - Efforts for bringing peace and stability to Afghanistan will gather pace if the United States leaves the country, believes an Iranian official.
Ali Akbar Velayati, a senior advisor to Islamic Revolution Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, expressed the view during a meeting with a top UN diplomat in Tehran on Tuesday.
Velayati told UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan Tadamichi Yamamoto the main problem facing the South Asian country was the presence of aggressors, particularly the US.
“If the Americans leave Afghanistan, the country’s civilised and politically-informed people will be able to determine their own fate,” Velayati was quoted as saying by IRNA.
Iran had always backed efforts for the establishment of peace and stability in the neighbouring country, he said, stressing a greater role for the Afghan government in the reconciliation process.
Velayati urged the United Nations to play a more effective role in Afghanistan frustrate what he called US conspiracies against the country and the region.
The UNAMA head commended Iran's support to the Afghan people and government, as well as its positive role in resolving the country's multiple problems.
Given its effective role in the region, Yamamoto underlined Iran’s greater involvement in the Afghan peace process and cooperation with the United Nations. (Pajhwok)
