Khalilzad Resume Talks with Taliban in Doha

KABUL - The US special representative for Afghanistan reconciliation has returned to Doha for resuming talks with Taliban negotiators, a source said on Friday.
Zalmay Khalilzad visited Brussels to brief NATO allies on ongoing peace negotiations with Taliban on a political settlement to the conflict in Afghanistan.
Following consultations in Brussels, the US and NATO allies reaffirmed their commitmentto military and diplomatic efforts to end the war in Afghanistan.
A Doha-based source confided to Pajhwok Afghan News Ambassador Khalilzad had been in talks with the Taliban for the last two days after his return from Brussels.
The two sides had agreed on reduction in violence, the source confirmed, saying the Taliban had promised not to launch attacks on cities, highways and security checkpoints, as well as US troops.
For an end to attacks, the negotiators agreed the Taliban and Afghan security forces would not enter areas under their respective control, the official added.
Some weeks back, Khalilzad paused the dialogue after a major Taliban attack on the largest US military base in central Parwan province.
The year-long negotiations have revolved around assurances that the insurgents would not allow the use of Afghan soil for attacks against other nations and they would enter into intra-Afghan talks after signing a deal on troop withdrawal with America. (Pajhwok)
