US Peace Envoy  Khalilzad in Kabul

KABUL - US Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad arrived in Kabul on Saturday, a source told 1TV.
Khalilzad's visit to Kabul comes after talks with Taliban and Pakistani officials.
The talks with the Taliban have reportedly focused on a reduction in violence.
Khalilzad arrived in Kabul from Islamabad where he met with Pakistan's Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi and Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa and other officials to discuss US efforts to faciliate a political settlement to end the war in Afghanistan, according to a statement from US Embassy in Islambad.
The envoy"welcomed Pakistan’s ongoing efforts to support a reduction in violence that will pave the way for a U.S.-Taliban agreement, intra-Afghan negotiations, and a comprehensive and permanent ceasefire in support of a sustainable peace," according to the statement.
Khalilzad also continued to emphasize the economic and security benefits that a lasting peace can bring to the region, the statement said.
A government source told 1TV that Khalilzad will meet with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani onSaturday afternoon. (1TV NEWS)
