More Students to Be Sent Abroad: Karzai

KABUL - President Hamid Karzai on Saturday said efforts were underway to double until next year the number of Afghan students receiving education abroad.
Speaking to members of the recent Loya Jirga from Daikundi, Bamyan, Maidan Wardak, Ghazni and Kabul provinces, Karzai said his government would also double budget for the purpose from the current $5 million (about 240 million Afghanis) to $10 million.

A statement from the Presidential Palace said Karzai called on youth to focus on their education as the country's development needed educated and skilled individuals.

About 422 students from across the country were sent abroad for higher education this year. The Ministry of Higher Education selects seven students from each province annually for study abroad.
Those who met the president called the Jirga a great achievement with regard to protecting the country's sovereignty.
