Global Support Pours in for Violence Reduction

KABUL - NATO, the United Nations, the European Union (EU) and Pakistan have welcomed the start of a reduction of violence across Afghanistan.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg hailed the announcement, saying: “This is a critical test of Taliban’s willingness and ability to reduce violence and contribute to peace.”
He said in a statement the reduction of violence could pave the way for negotiations among Afghans, sustainable peace and ensuring the country was never again a safe haven for terrorists.
United Nationals Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) said the seven-day reduction of violence represented an unparalleled opportunity that could lead to lasting peace.
UNAMA reaffirmed its commitment to working with all parties to support an Afghan-led process that included women, minorities and youth; upheld the rights of all citizens and led to sustainable peace.
EU Special Envoy Roland Kobia tweeted: “It is a very positive announcement.” He greeted both negotiating teams, hoping intra-Afghan negotiations would begin soon after the signing of a peace deal.
The start of reduction in violence was also welcomed by Pakistan, which said it was looking forward to the signing of the agreement on February 29.
Pakistan renewed its support for a peaceful, stable, united, democratic and prosperous Afghanistan, at peace with itself and with its neighbours. (Pajhwok)
