KABUL - America’s accord with the Taliban, fraught with imperfections and uncertainties, is supported by the Afghan government and our NATO allies, says the US defense secretary.
The deal was a road map to peace, security and stability, Mark Esper wrote in an article, which appeared in the Washington Post on Monday.
He characterised the agreement as the best chance the US had ever had to put an end to the 19-year conflict in Afghanistan and to bring American troops home for good.
The Pentagon chief acknowledged seeing a significant drop in violence in Afghanistan over the past week. This set the stage to approve a conditions-based agreement with the Taliban.
Esper hoped the peace treaty would ensure that Afghanistan never again became a staging area for terrorists to launch attacks against the US and its allies. (Pajhwok)
