UNSC Unanimously Adopted Resolution in Support of U.S.-Taliban Agreement: Khalilzad

NEW YORK - The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) unanimously adopted a resolution in support of the agreement between the United States and the Taliban group as well as the U.S.-Afghan government joint declaration regarding the deal.
The U.S. envoy for Afghan peace Zalmay Khalilzad said the UN Security Council adopted the resolution on Tuesday.
“Today the @UN Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution in support of the agreement we signed last week with the Taliban and the US-Afghan government joint declaration,” he said in a Twitter post.
Ambassador Khalilzad further added that the UN resolution also calls on both the Taliban and the Afghan government to continue confidence building measures and to move quickly to intra-Afghan negotiations.
He also added “The resolution demonstrates the international community supports our approach to security for the world from Afghanistan. And peace, unity, and sovereignty for the Afghan people.”
The U.S. and Taliban group signed a peace deal late last month after observing a 7-day reduction in violence.
Meanwhile, President Ashraf Ghani on Tuesday signed a decree to release 15000 Taliban prisoners as a gesture of goodwill ahead of the launch of intra-Afghan talks. (KHAAMA PRESS)
