Strong Govt Needs Lasting Peace, Say Kunar Scholars

MEHTARLAM - Hundreds of religious scholars and civil society activists in eastern Laghman province on Sunday asked the Taliban to declare peace with the Afghan government the way they did with the US.
The scholars believed establishment of a strong government required lasting peace in the country, asking the rebels to shun violence.
The gathering in Mehtarlam, the provincial capital, urged the warring sides to declare permanent ceasefire across the country.
Qari Sharifullah, a religious scholar, told Pajhwok Afghan News that the Taliban should stop the war in Afghanistan for establishment of a strong government system.
He said, “As the Taliban signed peace agreement with the US, now they must reach a similar pact with the Afghan government.”
Safatullah Laghmani, a civil society activist, urged President Ashraf Ghani and Dr. Abdullah Abdullah to reach an agreement and create single address for the peace process.
A number of other civil society activists and religious scholars held similar views and urged the Taliban to start peace talks with the Afghan government as soon as possible. (Pajhwok)
